An immigrant from Bangladesh who joined the New York Police four years ago, Islam is survived by his wife, who has eight months pregnant and two young children.
“I was doing the work we asked to do,” said New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “He endangered. He made the last sacrifice, shot in cold blood, with a uniform that stood out for the promise he made to this city. He died as he lived, a hero.”

“Didarul Islam represented the best of our department. He was protecting the New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically interrupted,” said New York Police. “We join prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will always honor its legacy.”
“We will always remember the Islam sacrifice officer, a husband, a son and a father, made for all of us,” said Senate Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday. “For the other victims, people only try to make a living, do their jobs, our hearts are broken and we also afflict with their families.”
Wesley Lepatner
Wesley Lepatner, a Blackstone employee, wife and mother of two children, was also killed.
She was the global chief of Core+ Real Estate and executive director of Blackstone Real Estate Inome Trust.

The shooting victim of the Manhattan office, Wesley Lepatner, was a senior managing director in Blackstone.
Black stone
Lepatner spent more than a decade in Goldman Sachs before joining Blackstone in 2014. He graduated from Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University, Blackstone said.
“The words cannot express the devastation we feel. Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be surprised,” Blackstone said in a statement. “It was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous and deeply respected within our firm and beyond.”
“Our prayers are with her husband, children and her family,” said the company. “We are also saddened by the other innocent victims, including brave security personnel and the New York Police.”
Lepatner was also a “loved” member of the Board of Directors of the New York UJA Federation.
“Wesley was extraordinary in every way, personally, professionally and philanthropist,” the organization said. “An exceptional leader in the financial world, brought consideration, vision and compassion to everything he did. In 2023, we honor her with the Alan Leadership Award C. Greenberg Young at our Wall Street dinner, recognizing her commitment to our community and her notable achievements, even more notable as a woman in a field traditionally dominated by men.”
“She lived with courage and conviction, instilling in her two children a deep love for Judaism and the Jewish people,” the statement continued. “That Wesley’s memory is for a blessing, and a lasting source of strength and inspiration.”

Gathmand Etienne
The Security Officer Aland Etienne was also killed, according to his brother, Gathmand Etienne.
“He was more than a brother: he was a father, a son and a light in our lives,” said Gathmand Etienne on social networks. “Our hearts are shattered, and we are asking for their prayers and strength while we sail this painful moment. Rest in peace, brother. You will never be forgotten.”
The president of the Union, Manny Pastreich, reminded Aland Etienne as a “dedicated security officer who took his work duties extremely seriously.”
“This tragedy speaks of the sacrifice of security officers who risk their lives every day to keep New York and our buildings safe,” Pastreich said in a statement. “Every time a security officer puts his uniform, he puts his lives on the line. His contributions to our city are essential, although often not appreciated. Aland Etienne is a New York hero. We will remember it as such.”
